Belem time!

Lewis –

We flew over the amazon as we arrived to Belem and wow! What a massive river! I am jealous of giving up the window seat to watch the water swash and wet beneath us. But i’m glad Izzy enjoyed it. Endless strethces of green awash with brown water.

The sight almost made up for the early start – 3:30am we left out hotel in Sao Paulo.

I had to eventually wake Izzy up after I told her to disable her mega-loud RSH alarm that almost gave me a heart-attack. Turns out we were early to the foyer anyway (sorry).

I also lost a trainer on the flight, izzy slept the whole way!

We stayed in an uber-religious hostel on the outskirts of the city, but first went to COP30 to see what all the fuss is about.

Izzy –

Arriving at COP30. Day 1 we access to the infamous Blue Zone (the hardest to get into, apparently). Loads of security. This is where the world leaders are able to gather – so, kind of a big deal? It felt quite corporate/surreal against the natural backdrop of the Amazon.

Lewis –

Voxpops. Today we did voxpops and my god, can I say? People here aren’t that chatty. Our first victim was a chatty English bloke – the first guy we asked – he stuttered and grinned as we asked him how many countries declare their military emissions. Trick question! None of them do.

Then we had a guy in a yellow suit jacket – matching suit and trousers – from Poland. He was much better at the questions. After this, LOADS started saying no. A shame, because we thought we had had such a great start.

The Amazonian Spice Girls did their first performance (it got hot, wink wink, nudge nudge – cheeky bit of foreshadowing there) and they killed their set!

Izzy –

Went onto celebrate, hard. We had dinner in a shopping centre and drank a f-tonne of caiparinas. Made a sticker of Lewis’ hiking boots on Whatsapp.
